How to Snack When You’re Dieting

August 3rd, 2009 / Posted in Editor's Blog by Cozy Editor

OK. So you’re trying to lose a few pounds. The trouble is, you’re always hungry, thanks to a calorie restricted diet, that allows you to eat about the same as it would take to keep a baby rabbit alive.

The secret is to make sure you have healthy snacks on hand, wherever you may be, so that your cravings don’t drive you to the nearest drive through window. Keep them in your car, your desk and at home – that way, when you’re tempted, you can indulge, guilt free.

Choosing the snacks you’ll stash can be tricky, but things like dried fruit, nuts or granola, fruit like bananas, peaches or pears, rice cakes and crackers, or air popped popcorn (minus the salt) are all good options.

If you clear out all the “bad” snacks in your home, office and elsewhere, you’ll be less likely to gobble them down when no one’s looking, and it’s much more of a hassle to go out and buy them when you feel the urge while watching TV, so you probably won’t do it.

Secret tip #58: Sometimes, we misinterpret thirst for hunger. Keep a supply of bottled water and diluted fruit juice, or even green tea at home and at work (stash a bottle in your bag too.) If you feel ravenous, first try drinking the fluid – if you’re still hungry ten minutes later, have a healthy snack.
