CELEBRITY Q&A WITH NADYA HUTAGALUNG

She took the fashion world by storm at the tender age of 12, and has since grown to become one of Asia’s most beautiful women. Following her success as a MTV Asia VJ, Nadya Hutagalung has allowed the spotlight to shine on her talents with beautiful eco-friendly designs for her jewellery line 0-Sel. These days, she plays a more laid back role as mother and eco-activist, championing a green cause with her website www.greenkampong.com. 

 

1) If you could meet anyone in the world (dead or alive), who would it be?
Both of my Grandfathers, they were both gone before I arrived. I am so curious.

2) Name your biggest extravagance.
An charity auction item. It was the most that either my husband or I had ever paid for anything aside from our house/car. At least the funds went to a good cause :)

 

3) Describe an ideal day.
Brunch days at our home, good friends, me in the kitchen most of the morning, everyone eating lazily, kids splashing in the pool, friends falling into dazed food coma states, warm sunshine and long afternoon shadows.

4) If you could choose another career, what would it be and why?
There are just too many things I would love to do… even when it’s not a hypothetical question I already have too many things I want to do. 

5) What did you do with your first ever pay check?

I think I went and bought Felix the Cat toys, I was about 12 and in Tokyo.

 

6) Who do you consider your idol/mentor/inspiration?
My mum.

7) Describe your idea of love.
It is the freedom to be who you really are without fear of judgement.

8) What is stardom to you and what is your measure of success for yourself?
I don’t know what Stardom is, but I know that I have a job, I go to work like everyone else. The only difference is that my job provides me with a platform to discuss issues that I am passionate about like the Environment or Women’s issues. Success for me is me being satisfied with where I am.

9) How do you achieve a balance between work and self?

I think I have a pretty good balance these days. I choose when I wish to be doing “nadya” work. I focus a lot of time on the kids, Greenkampong.com and designing for my jewellery line OSEL, and I can do most of that from home.

10) How do you motivate yourself to do what you do?
I look at my kids and think about what kind of world they will be living in when they are my age.

11) What was the best career advice you ever received?
No matter how successful you get, try to remain grounded and remember that life is cyclic. Sometimes you are up and sometimes you are down.
