It’s an immense struggle balancing health, work and play these days. In the morning wake up only to find ourselves immobilized, unable to drag ourselves out of bed and into the shower, much less wake up earlier to exercise. By lunchtime, inbox induced stress has already eaten most of our willpower to stay healthy and we once again returning to our vices by gorging unhealthy food. We return home to cold, low nutrition dinner which we then reheat in the oven (killing more nutrients) before consumption, after which we tumble in a drunken state into our beds, with a full stomach no less. It’s no better on weekends, when we decide to reward ourselves for all the hard work – heavy celebratory meals with family and friends, late night partying; alcohol for the clubs and popcorn for the movies, the weekend doesn’t take a break on your liver.
Apart from the obvious weight gain, such irresponsible behaviour can be extremely detrimental for your health and will slowly eat away at your body. What can one do then, to combat these problems in life? The answer lies in making tiny steps in your life. If you wake up too late in the morning, try waking up 10 minutes earlier to do sit ups – you’ll be surprised at what these 10 minutes can do with you when done regularly. Lunchtime willpower lacking? Psyche yourself for a healthy lunch. Narrow down the places that you frequent and mentally prepare yourself for the kind of meal you will be having – and stick to it! If you feel you really need to gorge on that unhealthy meal to fill that hole in your heart, delay it. If there’s any time to procrastinate, it’s now; tell yourself you’ll eat that satisfying fried chicken – on a later date. Late dinners are always a challenge, you can never be sure when that workload will suddenly increase, but at least ensure that by a certain time near dinner you’re munching on something light so that you can fight those hanger pangs so you won’t overeat your dinner.
Life may seem to big sometimes to control, but with tiny changes made here and there you can learn once again, that your life is very well in your grasp.
