Over the CNY holiday, we found some time to do some museum and exhibit-hopping. We got the chance to catch the Valentino Retrospective over at Resorts World Sentosa on its last weekend. Needless to say, the dresses (all 100 of them) were jaw-dropping! On display were his pieces from his 50 year career as one of the world's best fashion designers. To see haute couture of that standard, up close had a profound effect on even the most non-frivoulous of females. The entire exhibit was bathed in extremely low-lighting, as harsh lights could damage the dresses. Some of which were nearly 50 years old, when Valentino first started his career. All we can say is, it truly is all about the details. The exquisiteness of each piece signified a time when glamour was at its peak with a huge amount of respect for the female form. It was, as quoted, his dream to make women beautiful.
The main entry hall, which some people opt to actually do last as the finale, had notable (and recognizable) dresses worn by Hollywood celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Lucy Liu and Cate Blanchett. Moving along, we were enraptured by the delicate details of his florals, the purity and immaculate silhouettes of his whites, , the impeccable lines of his graphics, the extremely elegant use of texture and embellishments, the opulent volumunious dresses and finally, the fiery, dramatic reds which fashion history recognizes as Valentino red.
There is no other way to appreciate the genius of his work without photos, so if you missed this exhibit, try to pick up the book, or better yet, watch this. Anyone with an appetite for fashion, pop culture and cultural icons will love it.
