Michael phelps planning retirement after london olympics
Swimming champion MICHAEL PHELPS will hang up his Speedos for good after competing in this summer's (12) Olympic Games.

The American sportsman, who won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, has revealed the upcoming Olympics in London will be his last as he plans to retire soon afterwards. The 26 year old made the announcement during an interview on U.S. news show 60 Minutes, which aired on Sunday (06May12). During the programme, Phelps' mother Debbie pleaded with the athlete to continue swimming until after the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, saying, "C'mon Michael, just a 50 (metre) freestyle. I've never been (to Brazil) before." But Phelps, who has a total of 16 Olympic medals, was adamant in his decision to quit: "We'll go watch. Once I retire, I'm retiring. I'm done."
