How to Remove Grout

Grouting is used for all tiling: outside, in kitchens and bathrooms, especially.  These areas are subject to a lot of water, changes in temperature and cleaning.  Since grouting is a cement-based product, it will wear out over time and look grimy, or get infested with mold. To redo grouting, or touch it up in certain areas, you will need to remove the existing grouting.  This can be a difficult task, especially if you are unprepared and don't have the right tools. For small areas you could probably get away with using the edge of an old flat-tipped screwdriver.  The proper tool to use though, is either a grouting tool with a carbide blade, or a grouting tool that has serrated teeth.  Larger jobs will require a power tool with a rotary action and a grinding disk.  It is best to hire one, if needed. Once the old grouting has been removed, fill up the gaps with new freshly mixed grout and smooth it out with a float.  Wait 10 minutes and wipe off any excess grout with a damp cloth.  Allow the grout to set for the manufacturer's recommended time period.
