Morrissey demands zoo closure

Morrissey demands zoo closure
Rocker MORRISSEY has written to a top politician in Indonesia to demand action over the country's notorious zoo where hundreds of animals have died.

The former The Smiths frontman is on a tour of Southeast Asia and has already taken the opportunity to promote animal rights causes in Japan. Now it's emerged he penned a note to Indonesian Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan prior to his gig in the capital Jakarta last Thursday (03May12) calling for the immediate closure of Surabaya Zoo in East Java. In the letter on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and obtained by AFP, Morrissey writes, "Your ministry called for a change at the Surabaya Zoo, but no improvements have been made. There can be no justification for seemingly endless debates and delays while animals continue to suffer and die. Please take immediate action to close the Surabaya Zoo and transfer its animals to more suitable environments." The nature reserve - Indonesia's largest zoo - has been mired in controversy after it emerged around 500 animals died at the facility in 2010 and 2011.
