Simmons meets with martin's family

Hip-hop mogul RUSSELL SIMMONS has met with the parents of slain Florida teenager TRAYVON MARTIN and praised them for handling the tragedy with "dignity and compassion".

The 17 year old was shot dead in a gated community on 26 February (12), and the killing sparked outrage and protests across America. Neighbourhood watch participant George Zimmerman, 28, has since been charged with second-degree murder. Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, and his brother, Jahvaris Fulton, visited New York City last week (ends15Apr12) and were treated to a meeting with Simmons at his Manhattan offices. The star wrote about the visit in a post on his blog and revealed he was pleased to have been given the chance to talk to the family face-to-face. He writes, "I was extremely humbled to meet Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the proud parents of Trayvon Martin. As they came by my office during their short time in New York, I was able to see firsthand the strength of these two beautiful people... "As a father, I could never understand the pain they have been feeling since February 26th. However, they have carried themselves with so much dignity and compassion, that it is no surprise that the movement for justice for their seventeen year old son has followed their lead. I am in awe of their strength, faith and composure and all of us at (Simmons' company) GlobalGrind will do everything in our power to support their journey." Fulton subsequently thanked the star in a post on her Twitter.com page, writing, "I'd like to personally thank Global Grind (and Russell Simmons) for showing (us) a nice time in NY... All 4 (sic) Trayvon."
