The Secrets of a Smile

Have you ever been walking somewhere and a total stranger smiles at you?  Your immediate reaction is to smile back.  This interaction of smiles usually leaves both parties feeling that little bit happier for quite some time afterwards.  A babies’ smile, especially your own baby, has just the same, if not more of an effect on you.

Every time your baby smiles at you, it not only warms your heart, but in addition to this, it affects the reward centres of your brain, which makes you feel instantly happier.

In an experiment, a few women were shown photographs of babies smiling. As soon as the women saw their own babies’ smiling faces, areas of the brain associated with reward lit up.

This exercise helped in understanding the unique relationship that mothers form with their babies.  No matter where they are, when a little baby smiles at her mother, there is an almost secret

interaction between the two of them, and the rest of the world around them is completely ignored.
