The Secrets of Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a chromosomal condition and can be diagnosed before birth by amniocentesis. Usually, children with this condition have a round face, slanting eyes, and a wide nose. Their mouth is usually small, with a relatively large tongue, and their toes and fingers are often short. They usually have mild to severe learning difficulties. Roughly half of all children with Down syndrome have either heart or gut problems, which mean that they can suffer recurrent infections or anemia.

The key to helping your child is to follow your doctor’s advice with lots of love and patience. Most times, children with this condition are very affectionate and usually learn a lot, with encouragement. Concentrate very hard, and encourage your child when he does things right or learns something well, and let him do what he enjoys.
