The Secrets of Why Babies Cry

Babies cry for different reasons, and learning how to interpret your baby’s cries, will help you to respond more effectively. New babies are not spoilt if you give them attention. On the contrary, if you answer her cries for help, they will cry less.

If your baby is hungry, her cry will usually start slowly, building to a loud rhythm. This is usually the reason why babies cry, unless you are sure that she has had enough, and is crying for another reason. If your baby is in pain, the cry will be very different. It usually starts with a loud scream, followed by silence and short gasps. This cycle is then repeated. If you think your baby is in pain or ill, take her to your doctor as soon as possible.

Sometimes babies will cry when they are upset. The cry will be “niggly” at first, increasing in volume if you don’t respond, and is again, very different to other cries. Upset babies might need a cuddle, sleep, stimulation, peace and quiet, a nappy change, cooling down, or warming up.
