In this religion, the participants in a marriage contract must be free to marry, and also free to marry each other. In other words, they must be an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, with absolutely no impediments as set out by Canon Law. Catholic Theology teaches that a valid marriage contract is accompanied by divine ratification, resulting in a virtually indissoluble union, until the couple consummate the marriage. Once this has happened, then the marriage is totally indissoluble. An unconsummated marriage can be dissolved by the Pope, who is the Vicar of Christ. Once the marriage is consummated, however, the couple may only separate, as the marriage bond is not allowed to be dissolved. The term “divorce”, therefore, has no meaning in the context of Catholic marriage.
