We have to pay 5% of Goods and Service Tax (GST) for almost everything!

tabbie: 5% is considered quite low, you will have to pay about 14% or 15% in canada

Yup, 5% goods & sales tax is usually already included in the listed price.

It's only tax free if you're buying them while departing at the airport.

just to add, i think if you purchase enough at the dept stores, you are entitled to claim back the tax at the airport when you leave.

not too sure of the exact amount though, think it's S$300?

For tourists, you can get GST refund just keep all your receipts and when you depart, you can actually get them refunded. Just like in Canada.

Yeah I agree that we singaporeans should feel lucky that we only have to pay 5%, I paid 14% for tax in Toronto and 8.98% in Arkansas, United States...
