  • Blackheads/Blocked Pores - To Squeeze or Not?

There are threads on blackhead treatments / care / reduction. But would like to find out, should we press or extract blackheads and blocked pores on our own, with a blackhead extractor? Or don't use the blackhead extractor on these problem areas? (Meaning that just use scrub, mask, Retin-A, blackhead gel etc only?)

An aesthetic beautician (I suppose this is one up above a facialist?) told me that I should not squeeze or press my blackheads, even with a blackhead extractor, at home on my own. She mentioned that even some beauty salons do not do this properly, and can be bad for the skin.

The reason given is that if I squeeze blackheads, I would be pressing down the blackhead/whitehead/pimple deeper into my skin. This would supposedly lead to more open pores and more oilyness generated. And more SCARRING! The advice given was that I should mask and exfoiliate more to remove blackheads. And leave blackhead extraction to skilled people, or use other aesthetic treatments to remove. This means 1)Don't squeeze on our own and 2)If any squeezing, leave it to the 'professionals'.

Any advice on this? I just can't stand the thought of all those oil seeds on my face, especially on the nose and under-nose area. I just have to press blackheads once a week! But I do have perpetual marks on my face from pressing. And my forehead, which I don't press, is relatively free from pimples.

    Thanks!

what the beautician say is quite true as squeezing them will push them deeper and cause scarring.i heard that squeezing will cause enlarged pores and even pigmentation.i think it depends on how you squeeze it.do not use fingernails or squeeze forcefully.wrap your finger in a tissue then gently press for maybe 3 times.if it doesnt come out, stop.i do self extract as i cant stand them.i think just have to be very gentle.but for whiteheads better not squeeze them as the pore is not open, doing that may just caused them to develop into zits.

well i think what your beautician said is right, don't squeeze. of course it is tempting. i'm guilty of squeezing my blackheads. because some of them are so fat and black that it just irks me to see them. they look so squeezable i think sometimes you can get away with no scarring and hence think that it's fine. but there's bound to be situations where the squeezing is not done properly. i'm living proof, my pores are enlarged. better to leave them alone.

i squeeze the super obvious ones...most of the time they come out pretty easily. for the rest i just stick a pore strip on and relish the thought of the buggers getting plugged out haha...
also after that i use Avene Cleanance K so i make sure all the gunk comes out for sure...

i like to squeeze them but it left a lot of marks on my face, my beautician said best for me not to squeeze, so i'm not squeezing them now. I deep cleanse everyday and hydrate the skin everyday now. Got to keep the regime for 10 days

                Thanks everyone!

It's been 8 days... I'm resisting the urge to squeeze blackheads on my own, just to see the outcome. But I can't stand it - I usually squeeze once a week.

And the blackheads on my nose and around it... I just can't stand the thought of leaving the bits on oil on my face! I suppose if it is obvious and about to come out on its own, I can use tissue to lightly 'squeeze'?

If you press blackheads, does your skin really produce more oil in response? For those who do not get more scars, do you get more oily skin and bigger pores as a result?

don't squeeze it, if you can't stand the blackheads, use a scrub and deep cleansing mask to exfoliate them away. If not, you can DIY own extraction instead.

                    Whiteheads?

What about whiteheads? What do I do with them? I'm also guilty of squeezing everything i find irritating on my face.. I'm trying hard to kick the habit though..

Do face scrub work? Any recommendations?

Sometimes I use pore strips on my nose. However, I also get clogs on my chin, cheeks, jaw and when I unpick them, I get hardened "oil seeds", or like ernomous blackheads. Sometimes these leave open pore marks. Few days later, they become "filled" with oil again. Its a vicious cycle. Do u also experience these? How can I prevent them from forming? Are they from excessive sebum or what?

yup.once blackheads are ripe, they are very easy to be squeeze out.wrap tissue around finger, gently press and they ooze out.the keyword is 'BE GENTLE'. and it will not leave scars.redness yes but subsided very fast but not scars.if you squeeze very forcefully until skin peels and scab form then scar will appear.
and ya...i do notice that pores seem to be bigger than before

DO NOT squeeze whiteheads.because the pore is not open and some maybe embedded as well.squeezing them will only worsen them.sometimes they may developed into big zit.
you can try using AHA/BHA product ,deep cleansing mask.
they really flatten and eventually disappear.

Yup, I agree with Cocobelle about Whiteheads - these are too deeply embedded in the skin. It's not on the surface, and there's no opening, so usually, no matter how you squeeze, it would still be inside. Unlike blackheads, which can come out through squeezing.

Have you tried Retin A or Differin or other acne products?
