  • Water Filtering system

    Hi cotters,
I want to share my experience in buying water purifier. I know it can be a headache if you are looking for one and no one seems to know what you are talking about. So let’s share, shall we?

This article is quite long, so please bear with me, ya. (If it’s too long to post, please let me know)

Usually, I always drank from tap water directly, even from public toilet (refilling my water bottle). At home, the taste is quite ok for me. My sister cannot take it, so she always boil it. I could not stand the taste of boiled water. In public toilet, the chlorine taste is quite strong. But Singapore’s water should be safe for drinking, so I did not really care so much drinking from public toilet (or tap water at home) last time. But nowadays I always look for the water dispenser near the toilet to refill my water bottle.

After reading several reviews these past few days and based on my personal experience with tap water, I found that I need to filter my drinking water. But which water filter suits me best? Yes, the Spore drinking water is safe to drink. But the problems lie in the pipes during transportation to our home tap. It can be rusty, contain molds/algaes, etc.

I did some tests few months back. I cover the tap with filter clothes bought from DIY or neighborhood’s shop. After few weeks, the clothes became brown from sedimentation in the tap water. This sedimentation could not be removed by boiling water.
Also, I find this article about boiling water http://www.urwater.com.au//products/gurgle_tap.asp
In short, boiling kills disease causing organism, but it can cause chlorinated water to release small amount of chloroform gas into the air.

OK, so now into my research of water filter. So many water filters, but which one to suit me? I googled and found this page: http://www.waterfiltercomparisons.co...comparison.php
But, there’s a catch. In the page, it seems aquasana holds the best tap water filter. But…. This page was created by them because I found similar page descripting the same comparison. Price wise, need to be careful because only the filters accounts for the price. Not the device itself. I have read through Aquasana, Brita, Culligan (only short one), eSpring, and Pur. Most offers the same feature of reducing harmful elements (I could not find the exact details of percentage of reduction in respective homepage except for aquasana). eSpring and Pur have extra benefit of reducing bacteria and harmful virus. Then, in Spore there is OSIM, also claims to reduce 99.99% bacteria. But the device is so small. I am a bit doubtful >_< Also Diamond is quite popular from what I read from cotters because it can reduce the size of water molecules for ease of water absorption into the body. I did not find about bacteria reduction though. There is also Hyflux (I did not read much about this), Gurgle (http://www.urwater.com.au//products/gurgle_tap.asp) – claims to reduce general bacteria and some viruses) costs S$104 from DIY store (source: my friend :p).

The best that I read from reviews is water distiller. However, not feasible for me because not much space in my apartment plus it is noisy and slow. 5 hours for 4 L of water. Plus it heats the water first (wasting electricity – yeah, I do not want my electricity bill to go up >_<)

I almost bought one of the tap filter, but then, I realize I will probably not like there is something on my tap. Silly me…

So I downgraded – jug water filter or water dispenser. Note: tap filter performs better than jug filter. But I like slower filtration because I am ensured that the harmful materials are filtered out. Here I only list out whether the filter system can filter out bacteria or other microorganism. Other than that, they have similar features to each other (similar does not mean the same but I can compromise that) I have few choices:
    - Brita Marella XL 3.5 L S$67 (incl 1 filter): no filtering of bacteria (at least I could not find this claim in the website). Cost of filter: 3 for S$36 (maxtra filters) Life time: ~ 150L or 2 months whichever is faster. Has water dispenser for 8L water. But I read reviews that the tap sometimes can leak, also not all water can be dispensed out.
    - Panasonic 2 L S$ 69 (won Women’s weekly award 2009) incl filter. Filter lifetime: 3 months with 4L a day. (quite worth it I think, but it’s out of stock! I also could not find the price of the filter) http://panasonic.com.sg/web/pid/6560
    - Pur – claims to reduce bacteria with its 2-stage system, though in website, 2 stage does not seem to reduce bacteria http://www.purwater.com/pur-technology/ I see one in Takashimaya but did not notice the price
    - Novita (our own Spore brand) ~ S$68-80 (I forgot the exact price). Incl filter. Filter life: 35 days 145 L. Each filter costs S$ 45 http://www.novita.com.sg/drink-2210.htm have anti bacterial silver impregnation. Novita also have water dispenser costs S$ 169 and S$ 268
    - Cleansui (Body made in China, filter and design – Japan) ~ S$ 80
    - Gurgle – 1.5 L at AUD 27.5. Filter life 8 weeks or 150 L whichever faster
In the end, I chose Brita Marella. The water does not have chlorine odor or taste anymore. Yay!

great job for doing all the research but a lot of information here are not accurate. There is a lot of to water then just a tap filter. Even clean water can be bad for the body if its deviod of minerals, causing the ph to be slightly acidic. Study shows that such water going into the body begin to leech minerals from the body, resulting in brittle bones over long period.

There are a log of pseudo science in the water business and have u heard of people losing hair and health after consuming clean filtered water. FIltered, distilled, clean, alkaline, ionised, oxygenated. U name it.

For those who want to know more, pm me..

Drinking Alkaline Water regarding Better Health in Singapore

Since body is primarily comprised of water, it makes sense that this water you consume should be as healthful as possible. It's always best if you replace acidifying soft drinks, soda pops and coffee with normal water. However, drinking alkaline water will provide many health benefits for your body that common tap water or even water in bottles cannot provide. Producing your own alkaline water at home can be one of the easiest means of improving your health.

                      Health Benefits of Alkaline Water
It is just a wonderful choice if you have doubts with indigestion. Many individuals who have suffered for many years from digestive problems have discovered relief by changing to alkaline water. It can help to cleanse the colon, removing a lot of accumulated waste. Bowel problems can also be alleviated. It helps the body eliminate poisons, thus purifying one's body and allowing it to operate more efficiently. When the body's pH is kept slightly alkaline, it is a lot more resistant to diseases.

Research indicates that cancer cells grow faster within an acid environment, therefore keeping the body's ph at a slightly alkaline amount can help increase your effectiveness against this terrible illness. It can also help prevent premature aging, both simply by drinking the water as well as using it for cleansing purposes, since it ends in better hydration and may actually help alleviate the skin. It is also a powerful antioxidant, helping to counteract the free radicals in your body. Alkaline normal water has been successfully used by so many individuals to treat hypertension, diabetes, headaches, and a lot of other common health problems. It is also a good idea to eat if you are on a weight-loss diet, or if you are trying to maintain a healthy weight level. When the body's pH is stored at a slightly alkaline amount, weight loss and fat maintenance is easier. Lots of people think of ionized alkaline water as their own personal elixir of youth, because it can be used to relieve so many negative health issues.

                      How to Make Alkaline Water
There are a variety of different ways to create alkaline water. If you are on a budget, you can make your water using a simple gallon jug. Add a 50 % teaspoon of baking soda to the jug after that fill with h2o. Shake well then check with a pH strip. Your water really should have a pH a higher level 8.5 in order to 9 for optimum final results. You can also use alkaline tablets or drops to be able to alkalize your own water. There's also jug filters which can be used to make out of regular water.

However, a normal water ionizing apparatus is generally easy and simple and most convenient strategy for making sure you have lots of alkaline water for having, cooking and personal washing. These devices can be put in under the sink or perhaps on the counter. Though water ionizers are not usually inexpensive, most people whom own them feel they are worth the expense in convenience and also health benefits.

This article that I read online on alkaline water: Is alkaline water really better than plain tap water for the body? | ASK!

A number of my friends rave about the filtration system, HomePure.
I had the opportunity to drink the water at a friend's office. It does taste more refreshing.

You can read more about it at QNet.net – HomePure | Water Filtration System.

                          Water purifiers

Having had the knowledge that the choice of drinking water is critical to my health, I understand that only if the water system goes through the process of ionization, that provide ‘negatively charged’ water (-ORP) is the one that has real health benefits. You must check out the company VWA (Welcome to VWA - Home) which provides the top water ionizers independently rated by 3 major research companies in USA. You cannot go wrong with this.
