Pardon me if I'm wrong, but there seems to be an increase in the number of Singaporean men who are having girlfriends or wives from Thailand. How do they even communicate ? Being able to order green curry and phad thai, and saying mai krap or tee rak does not equate to being fluent in thai language and culture ! In my opinion, much of their actions are based on what they perceive as "happening" in our local night scene, and the influence of their peers.

Btw - I didn't know that it's trendy to have a Thai gf or wife for Singaporean men? How did it come about? Chinese PRCs and Vietnamese brides yes, but Thai brides are fairly new to me (for Singaporeans).

It's much like fashion statements but on a sub-standard scale.

It's like your shark fins example - just because it's expensive, fashionable and trendy doesn't necessarily means it's good for us or for the world at large. But someone is willing to pay a huge price for it and another person is willing to supply the fins satisfying the buyer in terms of pride, prestige and face value. Both gets what they need.

The men pays for a thai wife and gets obedience, prettiness, youth and sex on demand in return.

The women pays for a ridiculously expensive bag and gets pride, prestige and self confidence in return.

Both are easy way out to get something quickly for as little effort as possible. It's easier to buy obedience and sex than having to work for it. It's easier to buy prestige and pride than having to put effort into establishing it.

If you need something, the society is always there to supply it.

But going back on topic, a relationship with anyone or anything that is based on monetary exchange will eventually result in misery because underneath the exchange is an empty vacuum instead of solid foundations that can set the growth for bigger things to come.

I dont think its fairly obvious now, but when I walk along the streets or randomly clicking ( stalking ) people on facebook, I do notice a growing number of them having a thai partner.

But putting things aside, a couple of these foreign workers/dancers/walking-branded-stores are actually nice people, its a pity I am not fluent in any language except English, it would be great if we could find out more about them as a person
