    VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION?!

dog & babies can't be together?? any one?? please answer my miserable doubt...

  • #2
Smokeyeyes, of course dogs and babies can live together. Alot of new moms and moms-to-be on this forum have dogs.

Infact, I have 2 cats and I'm definitely NOT getting rid of them. All it takes is some care and caution when you first bring your baby home, and also some watching when your dog adapts to the new arrival.

There was a full page article in The Straits Time about a month back on pets and babies / kids. The article had several cases of local families bringing up their children with their pets (cats and dogs) successfully.

I think too many ppl give up their pets (when pregnancy is first detected) without making an effort to try to accomodate both pet and baby.

Check the internet, there's lots of articles on raising pets and babies successfully

      yap.. thanks mog..

i asked because my bro warned me not to let the dog into the living room as the baby now learning to crawl & my dog is "DIRTY" (so angry) and will cause BABY to have allergy rashes if she touches her face after she toucheds the floor which my dog passed by.. SO ANGRY!!!! he's well-educated for goodness sake!!!
      :puke:

can i have the website if you have? so i can divert it to him...

edit to remove quote. there's no need to use the quote function when replying to a post directly above you.

        Just google-search
You'd find some new findings that show pets + babies = higher immunity system. There are some older/ traditional articles that simply say pets + babies = asthma (which is something people constantly throw at me without updating themselves )

Anycase my hubby had asthma as a baby, if our baby has asthma, more likely his genes. Also I pointed out to hubby that day, FIL smokes and which hubby has the good sense to admit that 2nd-hand smoke might have triggered his asthma as a baby. I'm still not sure how to handle that- I've already been exposed to 2nd-hand smoke from FIL whenever I visit, which everyone else, my hubby included, is rather oblivious to (since I'm preggie and more sensitive). Later on when baby is out, that would be a problem. He already does not smoke directly in front of me (so I doubt he'd do that in front of baby) but even if he's at a far end of the room, it's still very strong impact.

So do check other factors in the environment before hanging the dog haha.

SMOKEYeyes, if your brother is afraid of the dirty floor, then maybe he should get a play mat for her to crawl on. Afterall, our own human feet I'm sure are not that clean too. ;P

When I was preggie, I came across this article on procedures for introducing baby to dog(s), which I find useful: http://www.cah.com/library/babiepts.html

I have 3 dogs and 1 cat. And they get along well with my 6mth old baby. In fact, I think my daughter's favorite dog is the Pug. She sometimes would laugh at Frankie (the pug) for no reason at all. So funny! lol.

Here's a pic of my daughter when she was about 3 months.

And then here is she today (she's 6mth old now):

hee... I love seeing little children with their pets. One day, I'll definitely get a little doggy for our little girl

Your baby girl is a cutie, momo!

Yes, momo's baby is very cute ! I'm hardly good with babies , in fact I'm quite used to them bawling their eyes out when I smile at them  but momo's baby is very responsive to smiles! She has that kind of curious expression and when you smile, she smiles back! And laughs back! Like I said, I rarely get that response... at best I get an indifferent look, at worst I get a full-scale bawl... makes me worry about smiling at other people's babies!

Momo's pug's face would make me laugh too ehehehe. Maybe that's why her baby's so smiley.

Just occurred to me... hmm, maybe momo's baby thinks I look pug-faced so smiles and laughs at me more readily (than other babies)? Hehehe.
The pug's face is really cute, makes me wish mine is a pug ahaha.

Anycase, sometimes it's a matter of mindset. Last Sat, AGAIN my dear relative commented that my (the extremely docile) dog "may bite the baby". I told her more likely my baby bite the dog and pull out tufts of her fur. At least hubby and FIL agreed with me that my docile dog is more likely to be bullied by baby. Smokyeyes, in your case... since the baby is not yours, I'm afraid it's very much more uphill task. Can try to educate your educated bro, but...

naughtygirl- Thanks Tanya. It's the funniest when she laughs at the dogs playing.

Mel- Yeah Frankie the pug is quite the joker. Hubby says he is Mila's 1st boyfriend. lol. She is very responsive and alert. Maybe cos I always talk to my daughter right after she was born, from everything,. anything, and nothing that makes sense. Or maybe cos we let her watch quite abit of TV, alot of Barney? Have no idea actually. lol. All I know is I'm all Barney-outed. I swear I know all Barney songs now. lol.

You pug face? Nooo I don't think anything can be uglier than the Pug. lol. I think she smiles at you knowing that you're gonna be a mummy soon too, and can feel the happiness around you!

About your relative, just ignore her. You know your dog best.

Stella- Thanks! Next time I go collect the stuff from you, I'll try to bring her along.
